First Grade Debutants

Over the years St Marys Rugby League Club have had 41 players who have come through the Junior League system to go on to become well established first grade players in various clubs in NSW and Queensland . Players like Peter Wallace, Mark Geyer and John Cartwright went on to represent NSW in the State of Origin series which resulted in both Mark and John being selected in the Australian Kangaroos team to tour Great Britain  shortly after.

Tony and Frank Pulatua played junior football for St Marys but were still eligible to play for New Zealand even though they were Australian residence.

You can go on and on about who were the best players of their era and never come to agreement, in saying that there were many characters who deserve mentioning, Lance Thompson the first half to come out of St Marys to play for Parramatta, Rolf Trudgett who went on to play with Parrramatta 1st Grade from 1947 to 1950 and then went on to Captain Coach Oberon and play against the touring French side. Ray Blacklock played first grade for 3 different clubs Penrith, Newtown and Canberra, John Cartwright played for Penrith, NSW and Australia and eventually took up the First Grade coaching position at the Titans in their inaugural year, and of course there was the larrikin Mark Geyer who played for Penrith, Balmain, NSW and Australia and has now taken up a position in the media to finish up a wonderful and colourful career.

Players to play first grade from St Marys include... Darren South (St George), Anthony Xuereb (Penrith), Troy Cassell (Canterbury), Dave & Mick Cartwright (Penrith), Luke Swain (Penrith), Shane Elford (Penrith, Wests Tigers), Frank Puletua (Penrith, South Sydney) Michael Jennings (Penrith) Peter Wallace - pictured below (Penrith), Tim Grant (Penrith) and Geoff Daniela (Penrith).
