Supporting the Community

St Marys Rugby League Club has a long standing tradition and reputation of providing support to our local community. The Club actively participates in the Penrith and Blacktown Local Government CDSE Committees as well as receiving hundreds of requests directly from local organisations and individuals. This year under the CDSE scheme, the Club was required to provide $397,000 in community based funding.

We are proud to report that the Club exceeded this figure and provided the local community, individuals and sporting organisations with over $1,000,000 in CDSE funding. This year the Club supported over 131 community and sporting organisations, a complete list of recipients to receive funding or in-kind support can be found on the inside back cover of this report. The following organisations and projects were selected as the Club’s major beneficiaries for the 2008/2009 year:

Variety, The Children’s Charity who has provided support to many families within our community over many years was this year’s major beneficiary receiving a grant of $60,000. The Club was again an active participant in the Variety Club Bash. This being the 9th year that St Marys Rugby League Club has participated in the Bash event, donating over $310,000 to Variety. The courageous drivers in Car No. 2760 this year were Warren Smith (President), Ron Coskerie (Vice President) and Mick Hilton (Director) who set off on Sunday 16th August from the Sydney CBD to Broken Hill to raise awareness and funds for special needs children.

Great Community Transport received a grant of $21,500 towards the purchase of a dedicated vehicle to transport the growing number of local residents who require daily oncology cancer treatment. This dedicated vehicle will provide more flexible and comfortable transport to and from treatments and ease some of the worry and anxiety for those people undergoing radiation and chemotherapy.

Tregear Presbyterian Pre-School continue to conduct their highly successful speech therapy program for children with severe language difficulties. Our donation of $18,414 ensures that 22 disadvantaged children are given the one-on-one speech therapy tuition from a qualified therapist that they require before entering the school system.

North St Marys Neighbourhood Centre received a grant of $15,900 towards an educational program for early school leavers. This provides maths tutoring for early school leavers aged 15-24 years who are faced with multiple issues such as homelessness, mental health, young parenthood and the lack of educational opportunities. This program enhances educational outcomes and increases the young person’s employability.

Other beneficiaries include the Werrington Community Project ($4,000) towards the annual Werrington Festival, Karelle Life Enrichment ($7,400) towards a Visual Expression & Photographic Exhibition, Penrith Valley Sports Foundation ($6,000) to support junior athletics, Tregear Public School ($2,300) towards their Breakfast Club Program, Bridging the Gap ($5,000) to start a new “Career Voyage” computer program to assist local youth and their families to develop career goals and Bidwell Public School ($2,500) towards their Good Start Breakfast program.

When disaster struck in the Victorian Bushfires, St Marys Rugby League Club joined forces with the many clubs around NSW in the Victorian Bushfire Club Appeal. St Marys Rugby League Club donated over $20,000 to the appeal with NSW Clubs raising a collective total of $2.7million for the victims of these devastating bushfires.

Our Board of Directors and Management are unanimous in their view that these contributions foster a spirit of mutual support in our community. As we support the community, so too does our community support the Club.

With your patronage St Marys Rugby League Club will continue to prosper and experience the kind of business success that makes these contributions not only possible but a fundamental part of our business strategy.
